Beany McGee and Rheinhart the Rhinoceros: Hero of the Day by Park Borchert

“Hero of the Day” is the first story in the series of “Beany McGee and Rheinhart the Rhinoceros”. The story is about a brash little girl who wants a pet, but her father and stepmother don’t feel she has shown enough responsibility to take care of a pet. When Rheinhart the Rhinoceros shows up, the two form a great friendship and set out to prove that Beany is ready for the responsibilities of taking care of a pet and Rheinhart is ready to be part of the family.
