Illiterate and with an increasingly volatile home life, fifteen-year-old Benjamin Washington takes matters into his own hands. Benjamin begins to teach himself to read in the public library in hopes that literacy might allow him to escape his dangerous home life, but the education that ensues is more than he bargained for, thanks to eighteen-year-old college dropout Bayer Etienne.
